Let's start with a real number

A 4 tier Eden Tower planted in greens will give you somewhere around 10 to 12 pounds a month.
To put that in something you can picture, a clamshell of salad greens from the grocery store is about 5 ounces. So you are looking at roughly one of those a day, month after month.
From a footprint smaller than 3 square feet.
That is enough salad that you stop thinking about buying salad.
It also starts sooner than most people expect.
You will be picking leaves about 3 weeks after planting. Not full heads yet, just leaves off young plants, but it is real food on a real plate.
Full heads land around 4 to 5 weeks.

That plant gets wide and full and heavy.
Now crowd it.
Suddenly the answer changes. Growing sideways is pointless, because sideways is where the neighbour is. The only direction with any light left in it is up.

The plant does not wait to find out how that turns out. It takes the hint and starts racing upward immediately, stretching for height before it has even been shaded.
It is a bit like standing in a crowd and going up on your toes before the tall guy in front actually blocks your view.
Which is why crowding hurts more than you would expect. It is not just that the plants shade each other eventually. It is that they start behaving like crowded plants the moment they detect company, and they spend the rest of their lives building height nobody asked for.
Give them space and none of that ever gets triggered. The plant relaxes, spreads out, and gets on with growing food.
How to check this on any system you are looking at

You do not need to take our word for any of it. There is one number that tells you almost everything, and it is not the one in the headline.
How far apart are the planting holes?
That is it. Not the plant count, not the footprint. Just the gap between one plant and the next.
Here is roughly what you are looking for.
For leafy greens like lettuce, spinach and kale, you want at least 4 inches between plants. That is enough for a head to open up and fill out without running into its neighbour.
For anything larger, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and the like, you want at least 8 inches. Those plants get big, and they need the room long before they look like they need it.
At 1 or 2 inches apart, plants are competing from the day they sprout. They will grow, and they will look green and healthy in a photo, but they will be stretching for light the entire time instead of putting on weight.
Most product pages do not publish this number, which tells you something on its own.
So measure it yourself from the photos. Find a shot of the empty system, look at the planting holes, and use something you can size against, like the width of a cup or the frame itself. You will get close enough to know whether you are looking at 4 inches or 2.
And if you already own a garden and your plants are underwhelming, go measure the gap on yours. It might explain more than your nutrients do.
